In the tech industry, CEOs tend to be males, and more often than not, white. As the reigning majority, getting their buy-in and support for promoting diversity in the workforce is crucial. It’s also important for male allies to have a deep understanding of the diversity gap in technology before proposing solutions that may send the wrong message.
For instance, when Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella made his famous gaffe when suggesting women trust karma if they’re not getting the raises they’re looking for.
To his credit, Nadella quickly backtracked, acknowledged his mistake and apologized, which ABI CEO Telle Whitney explains was the right move.
“I really came to admire the man,” she said. “I do feel that speaking the truth makes a difference.”
