Many tech companies, especially start-ups, have male-dominated work cultures that alienate rather than support women. In an attempt to combat this, some organizations offer unconscious-bias training. “Virtually every company I know of is deploying unconscious-bias training,” says Telle Whitney, CEO and president of the Anita Borg Institute (ABI). “It’s a fast and feel-good kind of training that helps you feel like you’re making a difference.” Just having these trainings, however, does not solve the problem. Companies must create initiatives and provide their employees with tools and resources if they are to see any real change.
