ABI Community Member Promotes STEM in Cameroon

As an active member of many Anita Borg Institute (ABI) communities, including Systers and ABI.Local, Sophie Monkam Ngassa is dedicated to supporting women in STEM. For years, Sophie has promoted STEM education in the city of Bamenda in Cameroon, teaching at a technical college and founding her own youth technical training program.

“In this part of Cameroon, most schools have no computers labs,” she explains. “Programming is still a new concept and the idea of mentorship is not well known, but I’ve been working diligently in eight secondary and four primary schools to raise awareness and curiosity in this city of half-a-million people.”
