Ruthe Farmer, the 2014 winner of the Anita Borg Institute’s Social Impact ABIE Award, has focused her efforts on increasing girls’ participation in technology and engineering since 2001. Ruthe recently gave a TED talk after witnessing students asking their schools for time to teach themselves computer science. While she was impressed with these students’ motivation to learn, she wondered about the students who don’t realize that computer science is even an option for them. With the support of the Obama administration, Ruthe set out to make computer science accessible to everyone.
