Acclaimed Leadership Workshop Aimed at Helping Technical Women Increase Visibility and Influence in Professional Environment

PALO ALTO, Calif. — February 12, 2008 — The Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology (ABI) will present its acclaimed TechLeaders workshop, titled “Power and Influence,” on February 27-28, 2008 at Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, California. The Power and Influence workshop is a leadership program designed to help technical women increase their visibility and influence in their professional environment. The workshop also provides technical women the opportunity to network and build relationships with other women in the technical community.

Led by renowned leadership expert Jo Miller, CEO of Women’s Leadership Coaching, the two-day workshop will focus on extending attendees’ power and influence as technical women through increased organizational awareness, negotiation techniques, strategies to raise their visibility, and influence techniques to increase buy-in for their ideas. Women’s Leadership Coaching has based its leadership modules on the successful coaching of hundreds of women leaders worldwide. Attendees will leave with practical and proven techniques to increase their influence, visibility and leadership wins while extending their network of technical women.

“We have surveyed more than 1,000 successful women about their career goals and leadership skills,” said Miller. “The result of these interviews is a set of steps that women can follow to create a personal brand and accelerate their careers. We’ve found that when those steps are put into action, participants get recognized as emerging leaders and accelerate their career advancement.” Presenters at the event will include:

  • Carole Dulong, Technical Lead, Google
  • Nina Bhatti, Principal Scientist, HP Labs
  • Nehal Mehta, Director of Software Quality Assurance, Symantec

“The Anita Borg Institute has surveyed more than 400 technical women about the most important barriers to advancement they face in their current roles,” said Caroline Simard, director of research at the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology. “Two barriers consistently make it into the top five: influencing others, even when you have the formal authority, and increasing your visibility. In response to those findings, ABI has partnered with Jo Miller and Women’s Leadership Coaching to bring technical women a TechLeaders workshop specifically designed to break down those barriers.”Simard added that, “For the first time we are offering our participants something unique. Included in their course registration will be three follow up group coaching teleconferences with Jo Miller to help participants implement the takeaways from the workshop in the context of their daily career activities.”
