TOOLS FOR BUILDING COMMUNITY

ABI Web picture

By Erica Rios, Internet Project Manager

Anita Borg began using technology to build an online community for social change in 1987 with the creation of Systers.

This year, Systers turns 20 and ABI is working to expand our online reach, foster rich engagement within our community and provide women in technology places to gather, interact and learn.

Our first step is the launch of a new anitaborg.org website. It has a fresh new look, feel and approach. We’ve used an open-source solution called WordPressa favorite of bloggers and now of ABI. With an events calendar, a news and resource section, and an rss feed, we hope you’ll find the new site useful and makes you want to participate in all ABI has to offer.

Thanks goes out to Kimberly Blessing and Phoebe Espiritu for all of their thoughtful work on the web re-design project. Not only did they deliver a beautiful and well-constructed site, they educated ABI on importance of web standards and accessibility.

In the months to come, we will be rolling out a variety of other online efforts to help build community including:

* The launch of a Grace Hopper Celebration forum and MySpace pages:
- talk shop and stay connected all year round.

* A LinkedIn philanthropy page:
- add an ABI badge to your page — a quick and easy way to network.

* An expansion of our Who Inspires You? pages:
- post your own stories of inspiration and inspire others.

Stay informed via our RSS feed and we’ll look forward to seeing you online or at one of our events.
