Welcome to the March edition of the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology newsletter. We celebrate National Women’s Month by congratulating Frances Allen on winning the Turing Award, and acknowledging Dr. Deborah Estrin, Dr. Leah Jamieson, and Duy-Long Le’s rightful place in history by announcing them as our 2007 Women of Vision Awards recipients.

2007 Award Winners Announced
ABI will honor recipients of the 2007 Women of Vision Awards at a gala event to be held on the evening of May 3rd, 2007 at San Jose’s Fairmont Hotel.

The Women of Vision Award for:

Innovation will be awarded to Deborah Estrin,
who is a Professor of Computer Science at UCLA, holds the Jon Postel Chair in Computer Networks, and is Founding Director of the NSF-funded Center for Embedded Networked Sensing (CENS).

Social Impact will be awarded to Leah H. Jamieson,
who co-founded the Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) program at Purdue University, an engineering design program that operates in a service-learning context.

Leadership will be awarded to Duy-Loan T. Le ,
who was the first women and first Asian-American to become TI Senior Fellow and a beacon of inspiration to everyone who hears her story.


WOV Speakers

Keynote Speaker: Esther Dyson, Authority on emerging digital technology & named by Forbes magazine as one of the most powerful women in American business.

Featuring Award-winning broadcast journalist and, CBS5 Eyewitness News, Early Edition anchor, Sydnie Kohara will be the Master of Ceremonies at ABI’s 2007 WOMEN OF VISION AWARDS GALA on May 3, 2007.

This exciting evening will recognize three women for their contributions to technology.

Writing Women into History

March is National Women’s History month and more women than ever are making
their way onto the pages of history books.

On the political front, Nancy Pelosi became the first female Speaker of the House,
the U.S. Senate swore-in its largest-ever contingent of female Senators and Hillary
Clinton launched a serious bid for the White House. In academia, Drew Gilpin Faust
was named president of Harvard, becoming the first female in the University’s 371-year
history. Two women, Indra Nooyi of PepsiCo and Angela Braly of Wellpoint, the nation’s
largest health insurer, were named first-time female CEOs of their Fortune 500 companies.
