GOOGLE ANITA BORG MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS

As part of its ongoing commitment to supporting and encouraging women in technology, Google is pleased to announce the 2008 Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship. Inspired by Dr. Anita Borg’s vision for advancing the participation of women in computing and technological fields, this scholarship recognizes the achievements and contributions of women pursuing computer science studies in North America and globally.

Google and ABI shared the goal to encourage women to become active role models and leaders in tehcnology. The 2008 Scholarship represents the fifth year of the program in the US, where it continues to grow. Scholarships are awarded to female undergraduates and graduate students on the basis of the candidates’ academic background and demonstrated leadership in the field. Up to 20 scholars will receive a $10,000 scholarship for the 2008-09 academic year, and an additional group of Finalists will receive a $1,000 award. Recipients will be invited to the Annual Scholars’ Retreat at Google’s headquarters in April 2008, where they will have the opportunity to network with women in the computing industry through a series of panel discussions, breakout sessions, and social activities.

“I immensely enjoyed being an Anita Borg Scholarship finalist in 2006 and a scholar in 2007. It was an amazing experience to meet a group of young women who were both incredibly intelligent and passionate about computing. I had a really positive experience at the retreat that reinvigorated my interest in computer science. It also motivated me to become more involved in activities which support and recruit women in computer science. It really opened my eyes to the abundant opportunities that lay ahead,” commented Alicia Thorsen, Ph.D. candidate, Michigan Technological University.

The Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship program is now open to women pursuing computer science studies in Europe, Australia and Canada, with plans for expansion to Brazil later this year.
