News Women Techies United at South by Southwest (SXSW)

Women Techies United badgeFor the first time, the Anita Borg Institute joins forces with nine other organizations and programs to help technical women connect at the SXSW® Interactive Festival in Austin, TX. Together, we’ll host a Women Techies United booth in the festival’s trade show March 13-15, 2010 and a Women Love Tech party on Sunday afternoon.

If you’re attending SXSW, stop by the booth to visit! I’ll have information about the Grace Hopper 2010 Conference in Atlanta this fall. And I’ll help technical women at SXSW connect with the full range of ABI’s online communities ranging from the Systers, Latinas in Computing, LGBT and ResearcHers listservs to our Facebook pages, LinkedIn groups, and Twitter.

You’ll also have the opportunity to network with representatives of these organizations:

  • Astia’s mission is to propel women’s full participation as entrepreneurs and leaders in high-growth businesses, fueling innovation and driving economic growth. Astia programs help exceptional women-led start-ups gain access to capital, achieve and sustain high-growth, and develop the executive leadership of the women on the founding team.
  • DevChix is a community of 350+ women software developers from around the world. Through an active mailing list, they discuss software development, programming languages, career advancement, work issues, social issues and more. DevChix is a respectful, welcoming networking and mentoring site for women of all skill levels.
  • Digital Sistas is a non-profit organization focused on using digital media and technology to access self-sufficiency tools for women and children. They provide services in collaboration with community partners and work everyday to highlight women of color as inventors of technology, creators of content, tech entrepreneurs, and leaders in new media.
  • Girls in Tech (GIT) is a social network enterprise focused on the engagement, education and empowerment of like-minded, professional, intelligent and influential women in technology. Their mission is to create and sustain an organization that focuses on the collaboration, promotion, growth and success of women in the technology sector.
  • LinuxChix is an international group of Free Software users and developers, founded in 1999 with the aim of supporting women in Linux. Founder Deb Richardson described it as an alternative to the “locker room atmosphere” found in some online technical forums. They have two core rules: “be polite” and “be helpful.”
  • NCWIT is the National Center for Women & Information Technology, a national non-profit coalition of nearly 200 corporations, academic institutions, government agencies, and non-profits (including ABI) working to increase women’s participation in IT and computing. Their work spans the pipeline from K-12 and higher education through industry and entrepreneurial careers.
  • She’s Geeky hosts unConferences to inspire women technologists for the future and advance systemic change in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields. They provide a space for women geeks to create enduring communities that foster collaboration and innovation among peers.
  • Women 2.0‘s mission is to increase the number of female founders of technology startups. Women 2.0 supports entrepreneurs with a network, resources and knowledge to take your startup from an idea to market launch.
  • Women Who Tech champions talented and renowned women breaking new ground in technology who use their tech savvy skills to transform the world and inspire change. They provide a supportive network for women in technology professions to share their talents, experiences, and insights.
