Anita Borg Awards Call for Nominations

$10,000 Awards to Be Granted in 2006

PALO ALTO, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–March 29, 2006–The Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology (ABI) announces the second call for nomination for two $10,000 Anita Borg Awards; one for Social Impact and the other for Technical Leadership. The 2006 Anita Borg Award recipients will be honored at the 6th Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing Conference Awards Banquet in San Diego, California, October 5, 2006, the world’s largest gathering of women in computing.

The deadline for nominations is April 15, 2006.

These unique awards recognize outstanding leaders who embrace Dr. Anita Borg’s lasting vision to change the world for women and for technology. Dr. Anita Borg, (1949-2003) was a noted computer scientist who mixed technical expertise with fearless vision. Her work inspired, motivated and moved women to embrace technology instead of fearing or ignoring it. She is responsible for including women in the technological revolution — not as bystanders, but as active creators, participants and leaders.

Karen Banks, Global Coordinator, APC Women’s Networking Program, and Dr. Fran Allen, IBM Fellow Emerita, were recipients of the inaugural Anita Borg Awards in 2004.

Anita Borg Social Impact Award

The Anita Borg Social Impact Award is an international award that honors an individual or team who has caused technology to have a positive impact on the lives of women and society or who has caused women to have a significant impact on the design and use of technology.

Anita Borg Technical Leadership Award

The Anita Borg Technical Leadership Award recognizes and celebrates an outstanding woman technical leader. Her technical work has been ground breaking and her leadership has increased women’s impact, representation, and effectiveness in the technology arena.
