News Leading the Pride

If you’ve ever consulted an O’Reilly book to solve a technical problem, you’ve likely encountered one of the cute (and sometimes not-so-cute) animals gracing the cover. Of course, the cover animal is not just for entertainment, it also serves as a representative of the book’s subject.

It’s fitting that the lioness is the mascot of O’Reilly’s latest publication, “Women in Tech,” a month-long series of articles on its web site highlighting the achievements of women in a variety of technical disciplines. Though the lion gets all the glory as the “king of the jungle,” it’s the female lion who provides food and leads the pride.

Every day during September, O’Reilly will feature an article from a female developer, leader, author, programmer, or other strong female voice. Among the contributers are Kaliya Hamlin, Identity Woman and an organizer of the She’s Geeky Unconference; Leslie Hawthorn, who works at the Open Source Programs Office at Google; and Shelley Powers, software developer/architect, photographer, and author.

And our own Erica Rios wrote the article “Tagged” for this series.
