Job Hunting at the Holidays by Guest Blogger Rebecca Kieler, Kieler Career Consulting

If you are in a job search or thinking you need to begin one please do not fall into the mindset of so many that this is not a good time to do so. I promise you hiring does not just stop because a large chunk of paid holidays are bunched together at the end of the year!

That being said many people do not know this and will not read this or other articles and they will drop out of the competition, which means of course You have less competition! This is a time of year when fall trade shows and conferences are over and except for a few days between Dec. 24 and Jan 1 many decision makers are in the office and this is why.

Many of them believe it or not still have budgets to spend that they will lose if they are not utilized. Hiring managers have new goals for the new year and new budgets as well. They are keeping their eye on those goals and the staff needed to accomplish them. The demands of business do not go away (do not take a holiday) and they are looking for a jump start. Often there are Dec. hires and Jan. start dates at the very least. Not so bad, you really get to enjoy the holidays knowing you have secured a new position!

Here are a few TIPS for Holiday Job Search. This is a time filled with events. Work has usually slowed down and people become more social. Take advantage!

  • Book your calendar with events and have career related goals for each event.
  • This includes family and friends. Do you know everyone’s friends or in-laws who just might be valuable to you in your search? If they know specifically what you are looking for they may know someone who you need to know.
  • This means you need to have a succinct and compelling statement ready that will easily help others understand what you need or who you need to know. (elevator speech)
  • Send holiday or new year cards…take the time to connect
  • Schedule at least one proactive career related task daily. Positive action is the best remedy for the holiday blues.
  • Check out professional organizations. Most are having events. If you are shy or uncomfortable at these events call and ask to volunteer. You will have something to do, be part of the event and it is easier to meet people.
  • All of us have people we wish we had not lost contact with. We feel awkward reconnecting and LinkedIn is an easy way and this is an easy time to invite them to re-connect and state your desire to chat.
  • Do not ask people if they know who is hiring or if they have a job for you. That is too big a task for most people and they will feel put on the spot. Instead tell them you are researching companies/industries/positions to find what is right for you and you need to talk to people to gather information. You need introductions.

Last but not least, do take time for yourself and your family. Relax, recharge and take some time to appreciate the good people and things in your life and enjoy the season.
