News Increasing Math Literacy through Innovative Programs

While careers in mathematics, engineering, and technology are exploding around the world, America’s 15 year olds are ranked 24th in math literacy, according to a study the Program for International Student Assessment conducted.

In a recent article she wrote for the San Jose Mercury News, Marie Klawe (President of Harvey Mudd College, ABI Board Chair, and one of Grace Hopper’s keynote speakers) expounds on America’s educational system and its role in increasing math literacy. Math is an important foundation for all science and technology careers, which are exploding in their availability and impact.

In her article, Klawe highlights the Math for America (MfA) program established in 2004 to help improve math education in America’s public schools. The project is expanding from New York and into California through a collaborative program that will be operated by Harvey Mudd College, Claremont Graduate University, and the University of Southern California.
