Award Recognizes Companies for Successful Recruitment, Retention and Advancement of Technical Women in the Workplace

PALO ALTO, Calif. — May 13, 2010 – The Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology (ABI) announced yesterday the launch of the Anita Borg Top Company for Technical Women Award, a new award established to recognize those organizations who have demonstrated measureable results in the recruitment, retention and advancement of technical women at all levels. Companies who receive the award are widely recognized as leaders in leveraging diverse talent for greater innovation. The award was announced at the 2010 Anita Borg Women of Vision Awards Banquet. The Anita Borg Top Company for Technical Women Award is now open for submissions at www.anitaborg.org/Top-Company-Award/ until November 15, 2010.

Grounded in research and based on quantitative data, the award measures companies’ representation of technical women as well as improvement in women’s representation over time. To determine the winning organization, companies are evaluated on the basis of benchmarks in representation and demonstrated improvement. The set of evaluation criteria was formulated in cooperation with a social science advisory task force comprised of four academic experts on gender in organizations and women in computing disciplines.

As a benefit for participating, all applicant organizations will receive customized analysis and feedback with benchmarking information from Anita Borg Institute researchers.

“We are very excited to announce our first award for companies, which will augment our very successful awards program for women. This award will help bring about the cultural change needed to promote innovation in the workplace,” said Dr. Telle Whitney, CEO, Anita Borg Institute. “The award will not only recognize a winning company, but will assist all applicants with their efforts to recruit, retain, and advance technical women. Over time, the award effort will provide insights into how the representation of women is changing, recognize different types of companies, and establish a framework of measures for continuous improvement.”

ABI is well-known for its highly selective awards that recognize the achievements of technical women around the world.
