ABOUT JAMES BECK James Beck’s keen insights into operations, tax and accounting ensure that Mayfield Fund runs like a well-oiled machine. James joined Mayfield Fund in 1998 as Controller, has served as Chief Financial Officer since 2000 and was promoted to Managing Director in 2005. Previously, he was an audit manager for Arthur Andersen in the Silicon Valley. At Arthur Andersen, his client base consisted of various software, hardware and service organizations.      

To stay abreast of current trends and issues in business and management, James attended the well-known Berkeley Executive Program at U.C. Berkeley’s Haas School of Business in 2002. He holds a B.S. in Business Administration and Accounting from the University of the Pacific. James is a Certified Public Accountant and Certified Management Accountant. James’ background includes race car machinist and helping to build one of the world’s largest optical telescopes at the W. M. Keck Observatory in Mauna Kea, Hawaii. He offers a valuable and rare perspective to developing solutions to problems in a variety of situations.

ABOUT FRANCINE BERMAN      

 

Dr. Francine Berman is Professor in the UCSD Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Fellow of the ACM, and first holder of the High Performance Computing Endowed Chair in the Jacobs School of Engineering at UCSD. Dr. Berman is a pioneer in Grid Computing and an international leader in the development of Cyberinfrastructure. She has worked extensively in the areas of adaptive middleware, parallel programming environments, scheduling, and high performance computing.

Since 2001, Dr. Berman has served as Director of the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) where she leads a staff of 300+ interdisciplinary scientists, engineers, and technologists. SDSC is internationally known for its leadership in data-oriented science, technology, and Cyberinfrastructure, and its deep expertise in high performance computing and applications. As Director of SDSC, Dr. Berman is considered both a visionary and a pragmatist, and is a national advocate for the development of a comprehensive data Cyberinfrastructure.

Dr. Berman is one of the two founding Principal Investigators of the National Science Foundation’s TeraGrid project, and also directed the National Partnership for Advanced Computational Infrastructure (NPACI), a consortium of 41 research groups, institutions, and university partners with the goal of building national infrastructure to support research and education in science and engineering. She has served on a broad spectrum of national and international leadership groups and committees including the National Science Foundation’s Engineering Advisory Committee, the National Institutes of Health’s NIGMS Advisory Committee, the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology Board of Trustees, and others. She is currently serving as co-Chair for the international Blue Ribbon Task Force for Sustainable Digital Preservation and Access. For her accomplishments, leadership, and vision, Dr. Berman was recognized as one of the top women in technology by BusinessWeek and as one of the top technologists by IEEE Spectrum.

Fran also sits on the Anita Borg Institute Board of Trustees.

She is a licensed psychologist in the state of California and a member of the American Psychological Association.

Alan Eustace is one of Google’s senior vice presidents of engineering. He joined Google in the summer of 2002. Prior to Google, Alan spent 15 years at Digital/Compaq/HP’s Western Research Laboratory where he worked on a variety of chip design and architecture projects, including the MicroTitan Floating Point unit, BIPS – the fastest microprocessor of its era. Alan also worked with Amitabh Srivastava on ATOM, a binary code instrumentation system that forms the basis for a wide variety of program analysis and computer architecture analysis tools. These tools had a profound influence on the design of the EV5, EV6 and EV7 chip designs. Alan was promoted to director of the Western Research Laboratory in 1999. WRL had active projects in pocket computing, chip multi-processors, power and energy management, internet performance, and frequency and voltage scaling.

In addition to directing Google’s engineering efforts, Alan is actively involved in a number of Google’s community-related activities such as The Second Harvest Food Bank and the Anita Borg Scholarship Fund.

Alan is an author of 9 publications and holds 10 patents. He earned a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Central Florida.

Alan also sits on the Anita Borg Institute Board of Trustees.

ABOUT PENNY HERSCHER Penny joined FirstRain in late 2004 with the mission to solve the qualitative information overload problem of the institutional investor. She has developed FirstRain from a technology provider to the leading search-driven application provider to the financial services market.      

 

Prior to FirstRain, Penny was Chairman and CEO of Simplex Solutions, an electronic design automation company serving the global semiconductor industry. As CEO, she grew Simplex from a few engineers in 1996 to a high-growth, profitable software company. She led the company to an IPO in 2001 and through the sale of the company to Cadence Design Systems in 2002. Penny then worked at Cadence as Chief Marketing Officer and General Manager of a major division of the company. From 1988 to 1996, Penny was an early employee and executive at Synopsys. She started her career in 1982 as an R&D engineer with Texas Instruments and then Daisy Systems.

Penny serves on the boards of FirstRain, Rambus, the Anita Borg Institute, Planned Parenthood Mar Monte and CCPY (California Community Partners for Youth). Penny speaks on entrepreneurship, career management and technology challenges and has given talks at Berkeley, Stanford, BU and Santa Clara business schools as well as for numerous industry organizations and women’s career development organizations. She holds a B.A. with honors in mathematics from Cambridge University in England.

Penny also sits on the Anita Borg Institute Board of Trustees.

ABOUT KATHRYN HILL Kathy Hill is Senior Vice President, Ethernet and Wireless Technology Group at Cisco. In this capacity, she is responsible for growing Cisco’s Ethernet switching and wireless products and solutions across enterprise, small to medium-sized business (SMB), and service provider markets. These Cisco products support customer-relevant applications including unified communications, mobility services, and video on demand.      

 

Previously, Hill was Vice President and General Manager of Cisco’s Desktop Switching Business Unit. Under her leadership, Cisco’s stackable Ethernet switch revenues grew to a multibillion-dollar business and also achieved
record market share.

In addition to her primary responsibilities, Hill co-leads Cisco’s Commercial Business Council, a cross-functional team responsible for SMB and mid-market segment strategy as well as coordinated investment and execution in
the commercial segment. She is also an executive sponsor of the Gender Diversity Council, a company-wide initiative promoting gender and cultural diversity.

Prior to joining Cisco, Hill was Vice President at Ascend. She also held senior management positions at Newbridge Networks and Hughes Network Systems.

ABOUT MARIA KLAWE Maria Klawe is the fifth president of Harvey Mudd College, and began her tenure in 2006. A renowned computer scientist and scholar, President Klawe is the first woman to lead the college since its founding in 1955. Prior to joining HMC, she served as dean of engineering and professor of computer science at Princeton University. During her time at Princeton, Maria led the School of Engineering and Applied Science through a strategic planning exercise that created an exciting and widely embraced vision for the school.      

 

At Harvey Mudd College, she led a similarly ambitious strategic planning initiative, “HMC 2020: Envisioning the Future.” Maria joined Princeton from the University of British Columbia where she served as dean of science from 1998 to 2002, vice president of student and academic services from 1995 to 1998 and head of the Department of Computer Science from 1988 to 1995. Prior to UBC, Maria spent eight years with IBM Research in California, and two years at the University of Toronto. She received her Ph.D. (1977) and B.Sc. (1973) in Mathematics from the University of Alberta. Maria has made significant research contributions in several areas of mathematics and computer science including functional analysis, discrete mathematics, theoretical computer science, human-computer interaction, gender issues in information technology, and interactive-multimedia for mathematics education.

Her current research focuses on the development and use of multi-modal applications to assist people with aphasia and other cognitive impairments. Maria is a past president of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) in New York, chair of the Board of Trustees of the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology in Palo Alto, and a trustee of the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics in Los Angeles and the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley. In the past Maria has held leadership positions with the American Mathematical Society, the Computing Research Association, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, and the Canadian Mathematical Society.

Maria was elected as a fellow of the Association of Computing Machinery in 1995 and as a founding fellow of the Canadian Information Processing Society in 2006. Other awards include Vancouver YWCA Women of Distinction Award in Science and Technology (1997), Wired Woman Pioneer (2001), Canadian New Media Educator of the Year (2001), BC Science Council Champion of the Year (2001), University of Alberta Distinguished Alumna (2003), Nico Habermann Award (2004), and honorary doctorates from Acadia University (2006), Dalhousie University (2005), Queen’s University (2004), the University of Waterloo (2003) and Ryerson University (2001).

Maria is also the Chair of the Anita Borg Institute Board of Trustees.

ABOUT RICK RASHID Currently charged with oversight of Microsoft Research’s worldwide operations, Richard (Rick) F. Rashid previously served as the director of Microsoft Research, focusing on operating systems, networking and multiprocessors. In that role he was responsible for managing work on key technologies leading to the development of Microsoft Corp.’s interactive TV system and authored a number of patents in areas such as data compression, networking and operating systems. In addition to running Microsoft Research, Rashid also was instrumental in creating the team that eventually became Microsoft’s Digital Media Division and directing Microsoft’s first e-commerce group. Rashid was promoted to vice president of Microsoft Research in 1994, and then to senior vice president in 2000.      

 

Before joining Microsoft in September 1991, Rashid was professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). After becoming a CMU faculty member in September 1979, he directed the design and implementation of several influential network operating systems, and published dozens of papers about computer vision, operating systems, programming languages for distributed processing, network protocols and communications security. During his tenure at CMU, Rashid developed the Mach multiprocessor operating system, which has been influential in the design of many modern operating systems and remains at the core of a number of commercial systems.

Rashid was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering in 2003 for his work in operating systems and for innovation in industrial research. He also is credited with co-development of one of the earliest networked computer games, “Alto Trek,” during the mid-1970s. An updated version of this game has been developed by Microsoft and has been released under the name “Allegiance.”

Rashid is a member of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Computer Directorate Advisory Committee. He is a past member of the DARPA UNIX Steering Committee and the CSNet Executive Committee and a former chairman of the ACM Software System Awards Committee.

Rashid’s research interests have focused on artificial intelligence, operating systems, networking and multiprocessors. He has participated in the design and implementation of the University of Rochester RIG operating system (1975-1979), the Rochester Virtual Terminal Management System (1976-1979), the CMU Distributed Sensor Network Testbed (1980-1983) and CMU’s SPICE distributed personal computing environment, which included the Accent network operating system (1981-1985). He has published papers on computer vision, operating systems, programming languages for distributed processing, network protocols and communication security.

Rashid received master of science (1977) and doctoral (1980) degrees in computer science from the University of Rochester. He graduated with honors in mathematics and comparative literature from Stanford University in 1974.

ABOUT JUSTIN RATTNER Justin Rattner is vice president and chief technology officer (CTO). He is also an Intel Senior Fellow and head of the Corporate Technology Group. In the latter role, he directs Intel’s global research efforts in microprocessors, systems, and communications including the company’s disruptive research activity.      

 

In 1989, Rattner was named Scientist of the Year by R&D Magazine for his leadership in parallel and distributed computer architecture. In December 1996, Rattner was featured as Person of the Week by ABC World News for his visionary work on the Department of Energy ASCI Red System, the first computer to sustain one trillion operations per second (one teraFLOPS) and the fastest computer in the world between 1996 and 2000. In 1997, Rattner was honored as one of the Computing 200, the 200 individuals having the greatest impact on the U.S. computer industry today, and subsequently profiled in the book Wizards and Their Wonders from ACM Press.

Rattner has received two Intel Achievement Awards for his work in high performance computing and advanced cluster communication architecture. He is a member of the executive committee of the Intel’s Research Council and serves as the Intel executive sponsor for Cornell University where he is a member of the External Advisory Board for the School of Engineering. Rattner is also a trustee of the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology.

Rattner joined Intel in 1973. He was named its first Principal Engineer in 1979 and its fourth Intel Fellow in 1988. Prior to joining Intel, Rattner held positions with Hewlett-Packard Company and Xerox Corporation. He holds B.S. and M.S. degrees from Cornell University.

ABOUT TELLE WHITNEY Dr. Telle Whitney has served as President and CEO of ABI since 2003. Whitney has 20 years experience in semiconductor and telecommunications industries. She has held senior technical management positions with Malleable Technologies (now PMC-Sierra) and Actel Corporation, and is a co-founder of the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing Conference. Dr. Whitney served as ACM Secretary/Treasurer in 2003-2004, and is currently co-chair of the ACM Distinguished member committee. She was a member of the National Science Foundation Committee for Equal Opportunity in Science and Engineering (CEOSE) and is a co-founder of the National Center for Women and Information Technology. She serves on the advisory boards of MentorNet and the Professional Business Women’s Conference, and is a member of CRA-W.      

 

Dr. Whitney received her Ph.D. from Caltech, and her bachelor’s degree at the University of Utah both in computer science.

Telle weaves her professional life with her personal passions. She is runner, and loves to hike, including occasionally in the Himalayas. She and her husband Bill live in the Los Gatos Mountains. She creates her own jewelry, in her not so spare time.
