Who We Are: Yuqing Gao
Dr. Yuqing Gao is a senior manager and a Research Staff Member at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center. She also headed the Laboratory for Speech to Speech Translation Systems at IBM. She was the principal investigator of DARPA CAST and TransTac Programs at IBM in 2001-2008, and led and research and development of IBM MASTOR (Multilingual Automatic Speech-to-Speech Translator) systems, which received exceptional reviews for its superior accuracy and robustness, speed and memory efficiency. Dr Gao received the IEEE Signal Processing Society Best Paper Award for her paper “Maximum entropy direct models for speech recognition” in 2007. She has also won two awards from DARPA for her exemplary work which led to developmental breakthroughs in the application of translation technology in military and homeland security areas. In 2004, Dr. Gao’s work was recognized by MIT’s Technology Review Magazine as one of the “Ten emerging technologies that will change your world”. In Nov 2005, MASTOR was named one of five ‘blow your mind products’ as part of a cover story about “What’s Next” in Time magazine. The technology and Dr Gao were filmed by CNN, ABC and many major media. The most significant societal impact of her accomplishments has been seen in the donation by IBM of $45M of speech to speech translation technology in the form of hardware systems and software licenses.
Dr Gao is an IEEE Fellow and a member of IEEE Speech and Language Technical Committee. Dr. Gao has published over 100 papers at various conferences and journals and has contributed to 7 books. She holds 18 issued patents.
