Who We Are: Shannon Gilmartin

Shannon K. Gilmartin, Ph.D., is Director of SKG Analysis, a research consulting firm, and Consulting Assistant Professor at Stanford University’s School of Engineering. Her work focuses on education and workforce development in science and engineering fields. She is a Consulting Research Scientist for the Anita Borg Institute.

Shannon received her B.A. at Stanford University and her M.A. and Ph.D. at UCLA, and held two postdoctoral research appointments at the California Institute of Technology and Stanford University before starting her own consulting practice. She has taught classes at UCLA in gender, psychology, and education, and has published in Academe, The Journal of the American College of Surgeons, The Journal of Higher Education, Research in Higher Education, Journal of Women and Minorities in Science and Engineering, Journal of Research on Science Teaching, Journal of Research on Adolescence, Men and Masculinities, and The Journal of the First-Year Experience and Students in Transition. She is the co-author of Climbing the Technical Ladder: Obstacles and Solutions for Mid-Level Women in Technology, published by the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology and the Michelle R. Clayman Institute for Gender Research, and Dual-Career Academic Couples: What Universities Need to Know, published by the Michelle R. Clayman Institute for Gender Research. She also is a co-author of the recent Exploring the Engineering Student Experience: Findings from the Academic Pathways of People Learning Engineering Survey (APPLES), published by the Center for Advancement of Engineering Education, University of Washington.
